In the aftermath of World War II, Diane was adopted into the Doss family, joining eleven other children from different ethnic backgrounds who had previously been deemed “unadoptable.” Together under one roof, the twelve siblings became a national media sensation, challenging conventional ideas of what an American family could look like at a time when children of Asian descent continued to face prejudice and significant barriers to adoption in the shadow of the war.

After leaving Hawaii as a young child, Diane grew up knowing very little about her birth family. Decades later, her search for answers begins to uncover a past she had never known, raising a deeper question: How does understanding where we come from shape who we are? 

What begins as one woman’s search for her origins ultimately reveals something much larger: an extraordinary family story spanning generations, cultures, and thousands of miles– and a deeply American portrait of identity, belonging, and the evolving meaning of family.
